    Teaching Reading

    Teaching Reading
Reading is an important language skill. Reading books, newspapers, or magazines is considered one of the information sources. Therefore, teaching this skill in a proper way is necessary.
    1-What is meant by "Reading"?
Reading means to read and understand a piece of writing. If you read without understating, you just translate written symbols into corresponding sounds. A learner who says "I can read the words but I don't know what they mean" is not, therefore, reading in this sense. So, we should familiarize our students with the proper reading.
2- What is the importance of "Reading"? * Reading develops a person’s creativity. * It improves your students’ ability to comprehend concepts and ideas. * It develops critical thinking and communication skills. * It regularly increases the vocabulary. * It improves spelling when words are seen in print.*It also improves your students’ writing skills as they are able to “acquire good writing style.”
3- What are the problems that face us in "Teaching Reading"? How can we overcome them?
4-Did you try any strategy in "Teaching Reading"? How does it work?
5- What are the stages of "Teaching Reading"?
There are three main stages in "Teaching Reading":-
    A) Pre-reading stage: -
In this stage the teacher should:
    * Introduce the topic of the reading passage by giving information about subject which students will read about. For example, you are going to read about "Shopping", "Parts of the computer", "High definition TV" etc.
    * Present the key vocabulary. You don't need to present all the words that you think your students might not know. They should try to guess the meaning.
*Ask a focus question to be answered through Skimming.
*Ask pre-reading questions to be answered through Scanning. If the questions in the book are too difficult, you may ask (easy open-ended questions, Yes/No questions, Matching, true/false, extract synonyms, what the underlined/circled words refer to) but the questions must be comprehensive ones to test understanding; not to copy and paste.
    * Plan a time for the reading task.

    B) Reading stage:
This stage is also called "reading for purpose". Therefore, reading here is for a certain purpose, a certain goal must be achieved by the students themselves, with the guide of the teacher.
In this stage the teacher should:
    * Give the students a limit time for reading.
    * Watch the students to see how they are doing.
    * Ask Ss to Skim, (for the main idea of the passage).
    * Ask Ss to scan, (for specific details in the passage).
    * Silent reading (When). It comes first, to give the students chance to concentrate and understand.
    * Reading aloud (When). If you want to make sure that your students read correctly, or pronounce the words properly.
    C) Post reading stage:
In this stage the students should:
    * Answer the pre-reading questions.
    * If the students answer the questions correctly with a less interference by the teacher, the goals of the reading passage are achieved.
    * If the students are unable to answer the questions, you can allow them to read again.
    * Discuss any problems that may occur during the reading.
    * Extend the task of the reading passage.
